Barnes Jewish-St. Peters Hospital and Siteman Cancer Center, St. Peters, MO

St. Peters Hospital is 127-bed acute care facility. During my time at this hospital I was able to enhance my MNT and counseling skills working with patients on multiple floors and practice my food service skills with the Morrison staff. My rotations at St. Peters hospital included:

  • 1 week oncology at Siteman Cancer Center

The Siteman Cancer Center has operated a facility on the campus of Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital since August 2005 and offers a full range of adult cancer services. I worked along side the dietitian at the facility assessing patient's nutrition needs and gained an understanding of their lifestyle, food preferences, and eating patterns. I used my knowledge of nutrition, disease, cancer and its treatment to provide practical advice to help the patients eat and maintain their quality of life.

The dietitians at the Missouri Baptist Nutrition Outpatient Center provide individual nutrition counseling in a non-judgmental and comfortable environment. I was able to observe the dietitians provide expert nutrition coaching on a variety of topics ranging from managing diabetes to promoting a healthy pregnancy to preparation for bariatric surgery. I educated patients on carbohydrate counting for diabetes type 2 and gestational diabetes and was able to practice motivational interviewing and diet recalls.
